An image showed an official poster for a remake of the 1994 "Stargate" movie starring Chris Evans and Rami Malek that's set to be released December 2024.

In October 2024, a Facebook post by the page YODA BBY ABY claimed to show a poster for a remake of the 1994 science fiction movie "Stargate." The post suggested the alleged movie would star actor Chris Evans as the fictional character Col. Jack O'Neil, a role that actor Kurt Russell made famous in the original film. According to the post, the movie remake would also star Academy Award winner Rami Malek. Per YODA BBY ABY's post:

STARGATE REMAKE COMING TO CINEMAS!!!
Stargate returns to theaters in December 2024 from MGM Amazon Studios. Chris Evans stars as the courageous Colonel Jack O'Neil, with Rami Malek as the brilliant Dr. Daniel Jackson. Together, they embark on a perilous mission to Abydos to confront the mighty Sun God Ra, setting the stage for an epic battle. This exciting remake launches a new trilogy that will expand the Stargate universe in bold new ways.

With the alleged ad looking similar to the poster for the original 1994 movie, some readers seemed to interpret the rumor as a factual recounting of real-life events. One commenter wrote, "I thought it was July 2025 release but I'll take December 2024 woohoo Stargate coming back sooner," while another commenter wrote, "All about that updated cgi for this film. Hope it doesn't disappoint."

However, there was no evidence that the poster was real, nor that the supposed film was coming to theaters in December 2024. A Google reverse-image search of the in-question poster did not find any reputable news sources confirming the alleged remake. Rather, the poster originated from YODA BBY ABY, a Facebook page that describes its output as satirical.

YODA BBY ABY has made dozens of similarly fake movie posters. The page's bio says, "I'm just here to eat frogs, lift rocks and be satirical. The page is 100% satire and fake news." Also, the page's bio lists the website screenslant.com, which displays the banner "FAKE NEWS - SATIRE - AND MORE."

The poster by YODA BBY ABY was not the first instance of a rumored remake. In February 2024, for example, the entertainment news outlet The Direct highlighted "remake speculation," citing a different poster that claimed such a film starring Evans and Malek was coming to theaters in June 2024.

Moreover, on their respective IMDb pages, neither Evans nor Malek has a listing for "Stargate" in their upcoming film and television credits.

Rumors about a "Stargate" remake have grown from fan speculation on YouTube, which followed a 2014 announcement by MGM Chairman Gary Barber that his production studio was teaming up with Warner Bros. and the original "Stargate" director, Roland Emmerich, to reboot the movie as a trilogy. However, in 2016, the original film's writer and producer, Dean Devlin, told the movie magazine Empire that plans for the remake had fizzled out. In light of Amazon's multibillion-dollar acquisition of MGM Studios in 2021, the film and television outlet Deadline once speculated that "Stargate," formerly an MGM title, would be ripe for film or TV development.

The "Stargate" sci-fi adventure franchise was launched in 1994. The original film, directed by Emmerich, was followed by two more films in 2008: "Stargate: The Ark of Truth" and "Stargate: Continuum." A TV series, "Stargate SG-1," ran for 10 seasons beginning in 1997 and spawned spinoffs: "Stargate Atlantis" in 2004 and "Stargate Universe" in 2009. The franchise also includes the 2002 animated series "Stargate Infinity" and the 2018 web series "Stargate Origins."

YODA BBY ABY has a history of making up stories about nonexistent reboots, remakes and sequels of beloved films and TV shows for shares and comments. Snopes has addressed similar satirical claims from the account in the past, including the assertion that a new "Blade" movie starring Wesley Snipes was in the works and the rumor that "The Acolyte," a series from the "Star Wars" franchise, had been renewed for a second season.

For background, here is why we alert readers to rumors created by sources that call their output humorous or satirical.
